This is your chance to tour our historic Old Oakwood Cemetery with our local Riverport Ambassadors group who is sponsoring this tour. On Saturday April 28, 2012 starting at 5PM with the last tour at 7PM. You’ll get to experience a one of a kind visit complete with the Ambassadors in character of some of the most famous people from Jefferson’s past.
Four historic resting places will have the Riverport Ambassadors in character telling the story of the person or people at each gravesite. You’ll want to look at some of the other graves while you’re there. I have wanted to go to see all the lovely memorials that have been erected for loved ones. And let me tell you there are plenty that rival the graveyards in Savannah or Charleston. As I walked around by myself I felt a sense of peace for the place and was quite comfortable strolling the grounds taking pictures. The detail to the statues is just incredible, even the oldest with lichen growing on them and the letters disappearing from sight are still very beautiful to see.
The characters from history will be Yankee Sgt. Daniel Murphy, Reverend E.G. Benner’s Children, Renegade Cullen Baker and Pioneer Lucy Ann Alley.
Space is limited so please visit the Jefferson Riverport Ambassadors website or call 903-665-7963 to secure your tour time. If for some reason the weather is too bad for Saturday it will be rescheduled for Sunday April 29, 2012.
Although the tour is free this is a great time to make a donation for the preservation and maintenance of the beautiful cemetery that is a big part of Jefferson’s history.
